This week, I am pleased to introduce Dr. Aleks Radojcic D.N.M., R.N.C.P., R.H., P.H. who will guest blog for me and share his thoughts on cleansing and why you should do it.
Spring is at our door. It can symbolize for us new beginnings, waking up from a winter slumber, shedding of old clothing, letting go of old ideas, feelings of resentment, the desire to get into better shape, embracing new opportunities in life and so on.
Our physical body needs a tune-up just like our car needs one preventively in order to get better mileage, and reduce repair costs. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the primary organ for cleansing in spring is the liver, but the other organs of elimination can also be cleansed/detoxified for additional health benefits as well.
We collect toxins because we are exposed to thousands of environmental chemicals. Some sources of toxins include water, air, food, preservatives, pesticides, heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, chem-trails, electromagnetic pollution, etc…
These toxins collect in the body and often clog up some of the major channels of elimination – liver/gall bladder, kidneys/bladder, large intestine, lungs, skin and lymphatic system. Cleansing the body of metabolic waste and environmental toxins is critical to regain health and vitality, while preventing premature aging and degeneration of body, mind and soul.
Many popular holistic clinics in the western world, where patients are treated for “Incurable dis-eases,” put them through an extensive cleanse/detox program, with vegetable juice diet to help bring good nutrition and much needed alkalinity to the body.
Aside from body toxins, other reasons for feeling unwell may include the body’s deficiency of minerals, vitamins and other nutrients. This is largely due to the fact that the soil where many plants grow nowadays is mineral deficient. Our bodies in turn are minerals deficient because of the lack of it in the food. If we use supplements to fill the gap for these deficiencies, and do not cleanse preventatively, our system will not be able to well absorb vitamins, minerals and amino acids supplementation.
The importance of body cleansing was well stated from by a pioneer in cancer research, Dr. Max Gerson. In his book “A Cancer Therapy- Results of 50 Cases” he said: “In order to initiate healing, the first and constant care of a physician is to detoxify the body.” We know now that if both metabolic waste and accumulated toxins are regularly flushed out, and the cells are hydrated and nourished, they can retain their vibrancy indefinitely.
What other types of cleansing should we consider?
In the last twenty years, a number of holistic doctors have discovered other culprits that may impede our health and vitality. A few of these culprits are parasites and Candida. Practitioners and authors like: Rev. Hanna Kruger, “Parasites the Enemy within,” Dr. Hulda R. Clark, “The Cure for All Cancers,” “The Cure for All Diseases,” Skye Weintroub, N.D. “The Parasite Menace” and others, have discovered that parasites may mimic symptoms of many dis-eases, and as such are often improperly diagnosed by mainstream doctors. People in North America and the rest of western world have thought that parasites are primarily caught when traveling abroad to some warmer climates, but according to W.H.O., 50% of the world’s population may have some parasites in their bodies. On a recent episode (March 20th) of Dr. Oz, two doctors that are experts in parasitology, commented that 60 million Americans may have parasites in their bodies.
Even Candida/fungus has been suggested as a cause of many cancers. Dr. Simonchini in his book “Cancer is a Fungus” suggests that use of baking soda has helped to eliminate fungus from the body and achieve good results in cases of some “Incurable dis-eases.
Shouldn’t we all benefit by doing some preventative body cleansing program?
There are many different cleansing products and programs available in the marketplace. Some are three, some seven, most fourteen, and a few thirty days long. I believe that short cleanses yield only short-lived results. Take your time and do it slowly.
What May you Experience During Cleansing?
You may not experience anything unusual, or you may even feel increased energy and vitality. You may require less sleep. Or, you may, at some point during the cleanse, experience some unpleasant symptoms. The unpleasant symptoms are characteristic of what is known as a healing crisis, retracing, detoxification process, also known as “Hering’s Law of Cure”.
A healing crisis is a natural consequence of toxins removal. During a cleansing program, toxins are released from storage sites in the tissues and cells of the body and dumped into the bloodstream for elimination through the liver, kidneys, bladder, lungs, skin, and colon. These toxins have been stressing the organs and creating unpleasant symptoms, related to old health issues, and are brought again to the surface, before the body releases them.
Healing crisis symptoms may include nausea, headaches, sleepiness, fatigue, diarrhea, colds, swelling, pain, ear infections, boils or skin eruptions. The length of the healing crisis will depend on the amount of toxins your body needs to eliminate – from a few hours, to a few days, and in very rare cases symptoms may hang around as long as a week.
Symptoms should inspire your gratitude because it is, in a way, your body talking to you. At some point during the cleanse or after, you will start feeling better than before and will feel grateful that you have finally taken the responsibility of your health into your own hands.

In past blog postings, I’ve written about the importance of drinking enough water for your body weight and also about alkalizing your body. For some time now, I’ve been searching for an ideal water system that will not only alkalize my drinking water, but also remove toxins through a filtration process. I’ve attended many events over the past couple of years such as the Total Health Show and Green Living Show, to search for the system that will meet all of my requirements. Until now, I never found the perfect fit.
Despite the snow swirling around my home, I know that it truly IS spring out there. Last year at this time I was packing my bags for Arizona where I was off to meet Tim Blank, the creator of the Tower Garden at the official product launch. Not having much gardening experience under my belt, I felt a bit intimidated at the thought of meeting someone with his knowledge and experience. As it turns out, Tim is one of the most down-to-earth people you could ever hope to meet as you can see in this brief

Do you know what will be celebrated on March 15, 2013? This auspicious day will honour one of my favourite non-holidays of the year – World Sleep Day. YES! For all of you who enjoy their memory foam mattresses, warm fleece blankets and soft, comfy pillows, this is YOUR day. In addition, I thought it might be helpful to include 10 tips to proper sleep hygiene for both adults and children.
As I’ve spent the past two weeks of illness confined to my bed, it’s given me lots of time to think about the powerful healing ability of our bodies and to count my blessings. It truly is miraculous how our bodies will heal themselves. I was diagnosed with pleurisy and told by the doctor that there is basically nothing that can be done. I was told to take cough syrup if the cough gets to be unbearable and otherwise just to take painkillers for the pain. The doctor told me that with plenty of bed rest, my body will heal all on its own, without medical intervention.
During the glorious warm weather we had last week, I decided to sweep out my garage from the dirt and salt that is brought in on my car tires. With the mild temperatures, beautiful sunshine, and me working up a sweat sweeping, it already felt like spring. As I was sweeping, I saw my Tower Garden tucked away in a corner and got excited at the idea of growing my garden again this year.
During the winter, when the days are shorter and the temperatures dip lower, we may not be getting outdoors during the short daylight hours due to work, school, or simply because we don’t like to be out in the cold. And because we’re limiting our number of hours in the outdoors, we’re also limiting our exposure to sunlight and therefore vitamin D. As I mentioned in an earlier blog, Vitamin D is known as the “Sunshine Vitamin” and is vital to our health. It is called the sunshine vitamin because in summer, your body makes vitamin D when it’s exposed to sunlight. In late autumn, the angle of the sun changes so that no matter how sunny our days are, your body is unable to make vitamin D through sun’s rays. This underproduction of vitamin D lasts until spring, making diet and/or supplements very important.
This is the time of year when many of us set New Year’s resolutions or goals. It’s also a time when most businesses have their business plans and budget forecasts in place. This is an excellent place to start; however, I like to go beyond typical business planning to a more spiritual level of goal setting.
I recently invited a number of guests to my home for a holiday season potluck lunch. The night before, I spent the evening cleaning up to make sure that everything was presentable for my guests. I checked that there were enough empty hangers for coats in the entranceway closet, checked that the powder room had enough toilet paper, tissues and guest towels, and most importantly that I prepared enough soup for number of expected guests at the potluck.
